The University of Karbala accompanied the delegation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” on a tour of Al-Tar Caves in Karbala to discuss the possibility of including them in the global geological parks. from Arab countries.

The Assistant President of the University, Prof. Dr. Najm Abdel-Hussein, stated: “The area bears many criteria that qualify it to be a geological park, provided that work is done to provide service facilities such as hotels, restaurants, and rest houses.”

And Abdul Hussein stated: “The purpose of the field visit is to check the standards on the ground, and to come up with a detailed report on the inclusion, stressing the importance of an integrated Iraqi effort from the central government to rehabilitate this region from multiple aspects.”

Member of the Executive Office of the Global Geoparks, Dr. Marie-Louise Frey, said: “It is possible that this site is one of the global geological parks, especially with a number of studies conducted by researchers at the University of Karbala that show the importance of this site from a geological point of view.”

Free indicated that there are many geological diversities in terms of rock types and geomorphological structures in the region, explaining the need to prepare additional studies that help in listing.

The University of Karbala had hosted the training workshop organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on strengthening capacities to protect the global geological heritage and the establishment of UNESCO geological parks, in the presence of the university president, Professor Basem Khalil Al-Saidi, and a number of stakeholders.
