Researchers from the University of Barcelona in Spain studied the health benefits of eating bread, and how eating it is related to the amount of healthy fats in the body that support the health of blood vessels in general.
Healthy fats mean that a person has lower levels of bad cholesterol and higher levels of good cholesterol.
The researchers were able to analyze the effect of eating bread (whether white or brown) on a sample of 275 elderly people who are at risk of vascular disease.
The results showed that people who eat bread on a daily basis have a good level of healthy fats, and a lower level of insulin compared to those who do not eat bread much, which means that they are less likely to suffer from vascular diseases such as stroke.
Researcher Rafael Lorach said: “The data show that eating bread on a daily basis, especially brown bread, affects the balance of the diet, as it is associated with healthy fats and reduces insulin concentrations in the blood.”
