The term “periodontitis” is used to describe the late and severe stages of periodontal disease. If gingivitis is not treated, it can lead to chronic gingivitis, which carries symptoms and health effects such as receding gums, damage to the bone and connective tissue around the teeth, and tooth loss (in severe cases). While gingivitis can be treated, the effects of gingivitis are not reversible. It is a chronic, long-term condition that must be treated with the help of a dentist.
