Dentists and orthodontists refer to the abnormal position of the jaws and teeth as a malocclusion. Malocclusion is classified into three categories. In the first category, the jaws are in a normal position. Teeth may be associated with regular or occasional problems such as rounded teeth, cross bite, open bite, crowded teeth, or gaps between teeth. In the second category, people with a large jaw and advanced upper jaw and teeth, or the lower jaw is located behind the upper jaw and are smaller than it, and in the third category, patients suffer from a small and backward size of the upper jaw or an enlarged upper jaw.
The effect of orthodontics on the jaw is demonstrated by fixed orthodontic treatment and removable orthodontics which are performed according to the type and severity of malocclusion in patients. In some cases, depending on the patient’s age and the type of deformity, jaw surgery is required to complete the treatment.
