Dental implants and orthodontic treatment

Dental implants consist of screws, bases, and crowns to replace missing teeth. As you get older, your teeth will move more towards the front of your mouth. This means that your dental implant may change from its standard position to other teeth over time, or you may have misaligned or irregular teeth that you want to correct with orthodontic treatment. Many patients ask if they can get orthodontic treatment with dental implants.

If you need both dental implants and orthodontics, it is recommended that you use braces first, because the implants are fixed in the jaw and cannot move.

In no case is it recommended to place dental implants in the patient’s mouth before starting orthodontic treatment.

Sometimes, implants are used as an anchor point so that the orthodontist can apply the proper force to move the teeth. With braces, dental implants do not shift during orthodontic treatment. This means that the orthodontist, before starting orthodontic treatment, takes into account the fixed position of the implant in the orthodontic treatment plan.
