In children, since their jaws and teeth are still growing and developing, they can easily be guided into their ideal position for a full smile. In adults, the jaws are fully developed and the jaws cannot be moved, which means that changes in jaw structure cannot be made with orthodontic appliances like a 9-year-old would treat. On average, orthodontic treatment for adults is longer than for children.
