Expansion of the upper jaw

Bilateral maxillary stenosis mildly causes occlusal interference and of course mandibular displacement and posterior crossbite, in these cases maxillary expansion should be performed as soon as it is noticed to prevent tooth injury etc.

In severe maxillary stenosis, the mandibular displacement often does not occur, but the maxillary teeth are located within the mandible. These patients often lack space in the upper jaw, so widening the maxillary arch helps the permanent teeth.

Whether or not there is a mandibular shift, crossbite resulting from maxillary tightness must be addressed as soon as it is diagnosed.
