When you first see an orthodontist, he or she will place you in a dental chair and examine your teeth and jaw position. After examining your teeth, your orthodontist may take specialized computer images of your mouth and teeth. This allows the position of the teeth and jaws to be measured more accurately and to better tailor the patient’s orthodontic treatment plan.
The orthodontist’s assistant or the orthodontist himself may prepare a mold of your teeth. Once the mold is removed, there will be a complete picture of the shape and size of your teeth. As a result, the template helps the orthodontist determine how the braces should align with your teeth.
The orthodontist examines your teeth, mouth, and jaw. He may ask you to open your mouth wide or clench your teeth together. The orthodontist may also ask questions about whether you have difficulty chewing or swallowing, or whether your jaw makes noises when you eat or talk.
After examining, viewing the photos and asking the necessary questions, the orthodontist will express his opinion on how to treat crooked teeth. Some patients may not even need special treatment. Other patients may need a two-year treatment plan to be able to correct any abnormalities.
