Tooth decay is the result of damage caused by acids from bacteria in contact with tooth enamel. When oral bacteria multiply in a particular area, they enter the dental tissues inside.
The bacteria that is associated with the formation of caries is Streptococcus mutans, most commonly found in dental plaque. These microorganisms have a great ability to metabolize sugars from food, causing a high pH that attacks tooth enamel.
