Cavities start to affect the tooth enamel, the outermost layer. The first sign is the appearance of a small white spot, which, if not treated in time, will spread to the tissues.
There are different types of caries depending on the affected tooth area. Among the most important are:
Crown caries: affects the chewing surface of the teeth, at the top. This is most common in children.
Root caries: due to gum recession, the base of the tooth is exposed and not protected. The formation of biofilms and the appearance of caries is faster in this area than in the dentin.
Fissure caries: It is a type of caries caused by the action of bacteria introduced into the tooth enamel through a fissure or crack in the enamel.
Dental caries between the teeth: It affects the nearby spaces, where food debris and dental plaque accumulate when they cannot reach it properly with the brush while brushing the teeth.
Recurrent caries: After a restoration or previous crown assembly, there are areas where bacteria can accumulate to produce new caries.
