Using bleaches with extremely low pH levels in the tooth whitening process may lead to tooth hypersensitivity, as it causes the dentinal tubules to open.[33] Exposure to cold, hot, or sweet stimuli may exacerbate the severity of a hypersensitive response. Among those receiving in-office whitening treatment, between 67-78% of individuals experience sensitivity after the procedure where hydrogen peroxide and heat is augmented.[34][35] Although it varies from person to person, sensitivity after whitening treatment can last up to 4-39 days.[36][37] Potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride in toothpastes are used to relieve discomfort after whitening, however, there is no evidence to suggest that this is a permanent way to eliminate the problem of hypersensitivity.
