The use of personal home whitening trays is a patient-administered treatment prescribed and dispensed by a dentist.[50] Patients need to actively participate in their treatment and strictly follow the instructions given by their dentist.[51] Irregular or inaccurate use of whitening trays can cause damage to the patient, such as ulcers or sensitivity of the teeth and the soft tissues around them.[52] Inconsistent use of whitening trays can lead to slow and erratic whitening.[53] Some patients with a gag reflex may not be able to tolerate trays and will need to consider other methods of teeth whitening.[51]
