Using dental floss

Comments Off on Using dental floss

The use of dental floss is an important factor in oral health, as it removes plaque and food debris stuck between the teeth, which, if left, cause irritation in the gums, which leads to the gum tissue to bleed more easily. Acidic food left on the teeth leads to tooth demineralization and eventually caries.

Using dental floss to clean between the teeth is recommended at least once a day, and it is preferable to use it before brushing so that the fluoride toothpaste can enter between the teeth to help re-calcify the teeth, and prevent gum recession, periodontal disease and interdental necrosis.

It is recommended to use an appropriate length of dental floss for ease of use, about ten inches or more, and 3 to 4 inches of taut floss to place between the teeth. The floss is wrapped around the middle and/or index finger, supported by the thumbs of both hands, then gently pulled and moved up and down between each nostril. It is important to floss under the visible areas, by bending the floss around each tooth rather than moving it up and down on the gums, which are much more sensitive than the teeth. Bleeding gums are normal in the early stages of using floss, but they gradually stop bleeding as the gums become healthy with use.[11] A person should use an unused piece of string when moving around a different year. Removing the floss from between the teeth requires the use of a similar movement (back and forth), but by raising it slightly and then removing it from between the spaces between the teeth.
