With the exception of pet toothpastes such as dogs and cats, and astronaut toothpastes, most toothpastes are not made to be swallowed, and swallowing them may cause nausea or diarrhea. ‘Calcium-reducing toothpastes’ have sparked controversy.[18] Plasmodium gingivostomatitis has been reported with herbal toothpaste containing sodium lauryl sulfate presented as increasing the incidence of mouth ulcers in some people, because it dries out the protective layer of oral tissue, causing damage to the underlying tissue. [19][20] In a study conducted at the University of Oslo, it was found that patients who used toothpastes containing SLS were more susceptible to recurrent oral ulcers, and there was a benefit for patients with aphthous stomatitis when they avoided toothpastes containing this substance and used another type.[21][22]
