Mechanical valves are made of synthetic materials such as titanium, as they are more durable, and usually last from 20 to 30 years, but the risk of clot formation is higher in the case of mechanical valves compared to tissue valves, and therefore people who have mechanical heart valves should take anticoagulant drugs such as warfarin for life, making them more likely to bleed. Valve noises (mostly clicks) can sometimes be heard, and can sometimes be annoying.[9]
