Orthodontics as a modern science dates back to the mid-nineteenth century.[8] Influential contributors to this field include Norman William Kingsley 8 and Edward Angell 9. Edward Angel created the first simple system for classifying malocclusions, one that is still in use today. [8]

The first to use force outside the mouth was the American doctor (Norman), and the doctor (Emerson) was the first to invent a device to open the maxillary slit. And the doctor (William) was the first to describe attaching the teeth to rings to move and adjust them.

Until the mid-1970s, braces were made by wrapping metal around each tooth. [8] With advances in adhesives, it became possible to attach metal brackets to the teeth instead. [8]

The American Edward H. Angle is considered the father of modern orthodontics and is credited with developing many modern orthodontic methods. He is the one who led orthodontics to be an independent specialty. He described a system for classifying occlusal defects that is still supported to date.
