There are different ways to place implants after tooth extraction:
- Immediate Post-Extraction Implant Placement: Placing the implant in a fresh extraction site has become a popular strategy to preserve bone and reduce treatment times. On the one hand, it shortens treatment time and can improve aesthetics because the soft tissue envelope is preserved. On the other hand, the failure rate of early stage implants may be slightly higher. It is difficult to draw conclusions on this topic, because few studies have compared immediate and delayed implants in a scientifically rigorous way.[28]
- Immediately delayed implant placement – two weeks to three months after extraction
- Delayed implant placement (three months or more after tooth extraction).
There are also different options for the timing of the attachment of prosthetic teeth to dental implants, which are:

- Early Loading (One to Twelve Weeks)
- Late loading (more than three months)
