Misconceptions about vomiting at birth

Among the phenomena that may occur with some pregnant women is the occurrence of vomiting during labor (labor). Women have held some beliefs about the interpretation of this phenomenon, including:

  • Vomiting occurs when carrying a boy, because the boys’ divorce is protective, as they say.
Vomiting means that the water bag has burst and came out of the mouth and not from the vagina.
  • Vomiting means that the pregnant woman still has a long time to give birth, meaning that vomiting kills the divorce, as they say.
  • If the vomit is yellow, the pregnant woman will give birth to a female.
  • If the vomit is green, the pregnant woman will give birth to a male.
Madam Net presented these beliefs to Dr. Adly Al-Hajj, a consultant obstetrics and gynecology, where he indicated:
  • These beliefs have no basis in truth.
  • The water bag explodes and comes down from the vagina and it is impossible for it to come down from the mouth
  • Vomiting during labor is a normal physiological symptom, similar to the vomiting that occurs with menstrual symptoms.
  • It is preferable for a pregnant woman to abstain from fatty food at the onset of labor so that she does not vomit, especially if doctors decide to perform an operation on her.
