There are generally three types:
Flat lip only
Flat palate only
Cleft lip and palate
A cleft lip may be very mild and only form a cavity in the upper lip, or it may be very deep, starting from the lip and continuing through the nostril, hard palate, and even to the soft palate. Cleft lip can be unilateral or bilateral.
