As part of the activities of the Global Entrepreneurship Week, the College of Dentistry at the University of Karbala held a dialogue symposium on the negative effects of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics entitled (Antibiotic resistance… the nightmare of the twenty-first century) and in the college’s continuing education hall, in which the assistant lecturer, Sultan Karim, lectured. Sultan and Assistant Lecturer Ali Mahmoud Rishan, in the presence of a group of college students. Professor Sultan Karim Sultan opened the symposium by saying, “The increase in resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics has become one of the most challenging problems for modern medicine in the world, and that the overuse or misuse of antibiotics are two major factors.” This resistance is increasing.”
The symposium, which was held under the slogan (Antibiotic resistance… the nightmare of the twenty-first century), aims to introduce college students to the harms resulting from the misuse of antibiotics, such as overuse or failure to adhere to the entire course of treatment according to the doctor’s instructions, as well as to define the mechanisms of development and transmission of resistance among… Bacterial species through the transmission of their genetic material.
The symposium also included a detailed explanation of a practical laboratory experiment given by Professor Ali Mahmoud Rishan to demonstrate the resistance of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria to antibiotics through the Disk Diffusion Method. He commented: “The development of bacteria to resist antibiotics is a natural and expected fact, but if we do not hasten to take action… “We are entering a post-antibiotic era, in which common infections and minor infections can become fatal again.”
In conclusion, the lecturers at the symposium stated that the most important reasons for the spread of the phenomenon of indiscriminate use of antibiotics in our society stem from two main reasons: weak community awareness of antibiotics and the nature of their work, as well as the lack of strict oversight by the authorities of pharmacy owners that forces them to commit to not dispensing antibiotics except with a doctor’s prescription. .
