Lecturer Ali Abdel-Harr Abdel-Abbas, a lecturer at the College of Dentistry, University of Karbala, and in cooperation with a research team from the University of Karbala and the University of Kufa, published a scientific research in the international magazine The Open Dentistry Journal within the Scopus and Clarivate publishing containers, a research titled: The Correlation between Trigeminal Neuralgia and Local Anesthetics Neurotoxicity. Associated with Acute Inflammation: A Cross-sectional
The study aimed to identify the causes of trigeminal nerve pain after dental fillings, the cause of which is unknown, as there are no problems with the fillings after a local examination of them, but despite this, the patient suffers from constant tooth pain after completing those fillings.
The study concluded that this pain is caused by a medical error that sometimes occurs in oral and dental clinics through the incorrect use of local anesthesia in the area of the inflamed tooth, which leads to burning and pain in the trigeminal nerve through partial or complete damage to the tissue of the trigeminal nerve in that area. Incorrect use of local anesthesia includes excessive use of anesthesia by inserting more than one anesthesia needle into the inflamed area or using anesthesia at a concentration of more than 4%.
It is noteworthy that the journal in which the study was published is considered to be ranked second in the world, Q3, and has an impact factor of 1.3 in the Clarivate classification and an impact factor of 2.1 in the Scopus classifications.
