The College of Dentistry at the University of Karbala organized a training course entitled (Dangers of Chemicals Added to Foodstuffs) yesterday, Sunday, January 28, 2023, in the Continuing Education Hall. The target group for the course is all segments of society, and Professor Dr. Abdel-Bari Mahdi Mahood and the teacher, Dr. Manal, lectured. Abdul Muhammad.
The aim of the course is to spread community culture about the negative effects of eating foods containing preservatives, as well as clarifying the nature of preservative chemicals, their types, the purpose of adding them, and explaining their risks and negative effects on human health and their relationship to cancerous diseases.
The course included a definition of preservatives added to food. They are organic or inorganic, natural or manufactured compounds that are added to foods, medicines, and various cosmetics to increase their shelf life by slowing down or preventing the growth of bacteria inside them, as well as defining chemical and physical methods for preserving food, in addition to explaining the most important health risks of preservatives. Industrial studies and the most important diseases that may lead to them, including increased risk of cancer, hyperactivity problems in children, decreased heart health, and diabetes.
In conclusion, the course recommended the necessity of reducing as much as possible the amount of processed foods to which preservatives are added and replacing them with newly prepared foods and healthy foods such as cheese, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and nuts, as well as avoiding foods containing hydrogenated fats because they affect the heart.
