A lecturer at the College of Engineering at the University of Karbala, Assistant Professor Dr. Ammar Al-Tamimi, published a research in the IEEE Global Repository on the application of human earprint recognition as a means of identifying people from a distance.

In his research, the researcher used an algorithm based on (Geometric Transformation) and (SURF Feature Descriptor).

The research recommended following the proposed algorithm (SURFUR), which achieved a 97% ability to determine the location of the ear pinna from side photos of people with different backgrounds of the photos, in addition to being unaffected by the factors of image tilt, distance of people, or curvatures.
