A master’s thesis in Education for the Humanities at the University of Karbala discussed the concept of contradiction in The Scarlet Letter using critical discourse analysis, submitted by student Ayat Saad Abdel Amir.
The study provided a critical analysis of the novel “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne, focusing on the concept of contradiction.
The study aimed to examine the power dynamics, ideological assumptions, and social criticism present in the novel through the analysis of linguistic features, types of transitivity, speech acts, and their discursive and semiotic categories.
The study shows how Hawthorne cleverly uses language and literary devices to create contrasts that reveal power dynamics, ideological assumptions, and social criticism in Puritan society.
