A research team from the College of Agriculture at the University of Karbala was able to diagnose the cause of the root rot disease of the ornamental plant, “Cockscomb,” which causes significant economic losses in many ornamental plant nurseries in the Karbala and Babil governorates.
The study, which was co-prepared by Dr. Adnan Abdel-Jalil Lahof, Dr. Raja Ghazi, Assistant Lecturer Safa Jamil Sheikhan, and Dr. Zuhair Muhammad Ali Jadou from Al-Zahra University for Girls, concluded that the cause of this disease is the fungus Fusarium solani, which was diagnosed based on its phenotypic and molecular characteristics represented by using the sequence of the nitrogenous bases of the markers. The results of the study were published in the American journal Plant Health Progress, entitled First Report of Cockscomb Root Rot Caused by Fusarium solani in Iraq.
