A master’s thesis at the College of Science at the University of Karbala discussed the removal of some metal ions using two types of ligands. The first type is a multi-gated ligand fixed on polysiloxane, and the other type is the same ligand in the first type with the addition of nano-magnetic iron oxide.

The study, which was presented by student Ayyam Tariq Abdel Kazem from the Department of Chemistry, aimed to prepare porous materials derived from rice husks with nanoscale magnetic iron, diagnose them using physical techniques, and use them to remove a number of ionic pollutants in aqueous solutions.

The study concluded that porous materials are good at removing contaminated materials, and the percentage of removal increases with the presence of nanoscale magnetic iron on the porous materials.

The study recommended that it is possible to use other sources of amorphous silica and employ them with different organic groups and use them to remove pollutants, and to study the effect of using the same materials, porous materials, with other pollutants such as dyes.
