Do energy saving lamps steal our sleep?

The number of hours people sleep is constantly decreasing, and it seems that this phenomenon is accelerating at a very rapid pace. A recent British study noted that the number of people who sleep less than seven hours per night reaches about 40 percent, and one of the reasons for this may be LED lights.

LED lamps or in English (LED) are the most energy-saving lamps, and are characterized by their small size and long life, and after they were used in the past in cars only, they have become widespread in buildings and household appliances.

But the widespread use of LED lamps may be a reason for decreasing sleep hours in humans, according to what was reported by the website of the German doctors’ journal, “Artste Zeitung”.

LED lamps are now found in televisions, computer screens and smart phones, but also in lighting rooms and halls.

• LED screens delay melatonin production:

Melatonin is the hormone responsible for regulating the biorhythm in the human and animal bodies, and it has been proven by experience that those who use modern computer screens that have LED lights delay the production of the required amount of melatonin for an hour longer than those who use old screens.

Also, those who are exposed to blue light are more alert than others, and their functions and mental abilities are more active, and this may represent an advantage during the work period, but it becomes useless when sleeping.

However, the people who experimented with computer screens with LED lights slept after that as well as those who used old computer screens, according to what was reported by the German “Artist Zeitung”.
