The color and size of the tongue and the layer that covers it reveal many diseases and indicate a lack of certain vitamins in the body. Examining the condition of the tongue daily helps to detect diseases in their early stages, but doctors warn against exaggerating the matter.
A healthy person’s tongue is characterized by moisture and can be moved easily and is red in color without any layers on it. Each person can follow his health condition through the shape of the tongue.
The German “Gesundheit” website reviewed some of the pathological signs that may appear on the tongue and the diseases that cause them:
1. The appearance of dark red dots on the tongue may be an indication of an infection such as scarlet fever.
2. The presence of a dark layer approaching black may be a side effect of the use of antibiotics.
3. Inflammation of the tongue and its turning into a bright red color may indicate a lack of vitamins, or it may be a sign of anemia or diabetes.
4. Swelling of the tongue is a quick sign of the onset of serious allergies.
5. Dryness of the tongue indicates problems in the salivary glands.
6. Redness of the tongue accompanied by other symptoms such as headache and abdominal pain may indicate the presence of diseases in the liver, heart or digestive system.
7. The presence of an incomplete layer on the tongue, which doctors call “the map,” usually occurs after waking up and does not indicate a specific thing.
