The best way to prevent periodontitis is to get in the habit of taking good care of your mouth and teeth. Start getting used to this routine at an early age and stick to it throughout life.
Good oral care. This means brushing your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day – in the morning and before going to bed – and using dental floss to clean them once a day. Flossing your teeth before brushing them allows you to clean your teeth of food particles and bacteria. Good oral care keeps your teeth and gums clean and removes bacteria that cause gum disease.
And regular visits to the dentist. See your dentist regularly to have your teeth cleaned, usually every 6 to 12 months. And if you have risk factors for periodontitis — such as dry mouth, taking certain medications, or smoking — more frequent cleaning sessions may need to be done by a professional.
