In a study of patients who tested positive for COVID-19, their saliva and salivary glands were examined. In this study, decreased salivation was one of the most common findings in patients. These symptoms are often attributed to medications or mental health problems. Dry mouth is common in a large proportion of COVID-19 patients. Since saliva contains high levels of antiviral compounds, decreased saliva increases the risk of contracting COVID-19. It is interesting to know that as a patient ages, saliva secretion naturally decreases. This leads to an increased risk of corona disease in people over 50 years of age.
