Although many clinicians do not believe that COVID-19 is directly related to oral lesions, some studies consider oral tissues to be sensitive tissue to COVID-19 due to ACE2 receptors. One study found that cells of the salivary glands and tonsils had the highest levels of RNA associated with a protein used by SARS-CoV-2 to infect cells, compared to other oral tissues.
