Until about 2 years of age, a properly used pacifier is very beneficial for parents and babies. It helps the little ones to relax, sleep better and maintain a continuous sleep during the night, and also participates in the correct development of the sucking reflex to feed themselves.
The pacifier does not interfere with the development of the palate and teeth if it is not used excessively or for a long time. Pediatric dentists and endodontics offer a series of recommendations for a more hygienic use of the pacifier:
Limit pacifier use to 18-36 months of age, prolonged use can lead to worsening of pacifiers.
It is preferable to use a pacifier against finger suction.
Do not use a pacifier to delay mealtimes.
Do not wet the pacifier with any sweet food or drink, so as not to expose the baby’s teeth to the action of bacteria from the dental biofilm.
Avoid cleaning the pacifier with the mouth of any adult so as not to cross-contaminate it with microorganisms.
Have different pacifiers and change them frequently, to prevent the baby from becoming face and easier to remove.
