The mouth is an ideal home for all kinds of microorganisms to develop. It is a human body cavity that is directly open to the outside, with ideal moisture and oxygen conditions.
It is in the mouth that they can find food, because these microorganisms make use of the leftover food that remains on the teeth, gums, tongue, and other surfaces. However, there is a protective system that limits the type of bacteria that can live in the mouth: saliva.
There are some bacteria that have become accustomed to living in the oral cavity to adapt to the protective barriers of the body. These are beneficial bacteria that, under normal circumstances, can even be good for your health.
When this balance is broken, “bad” bacteria spring into action. They can multiply and colonize the mouth, causing all kinds of oral diseases such as cavities or gingivitis.
