Bacteria that cause gingivitis

Comments Off on Bacteria that cause gingivitis

Gingivitis and periodontitis are diseases of the gums that lead to inflammation of the mucous membrane and subsequent tissue loss. In the gums there is a benign bacterial flora, mainly formed by Proteobacteria, which take care of its health and protect it from pathogenic bacteria.

When the level of these “good bacteria” drops, the balance is affected and pathogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus or Granulicatella grow. These are the microorganisms that commonly cause gingivitis.
