Tooth enamel can have a negative negative impact by whitening treatment.[42] Evidence from studies shows that carbamide peroxide in whitening gels can damage the enamel surface. Although this effect is not as harmful as phosphoric acid etching,[43] the increased irregularity of the tooth surface makes the teeth more susceptible to external staining, thus having an increased detrimental effect on aesthetics. Increased porosity and changes in surface roughness may have an effect on formation of supra- and subgingival plaque, thus increasing adhesion to bacterial species such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, important contributors to dental cavities.[32] Dental restorations are subject to unacceptable discoloration even when home systems are used
