Many (but not all) toothpastes contain sodium lauryl sulfate or related surfactants (detergents). Sodium lauryl sulfate is found in many other personal care products such as shampoo, and it is mainly a foaming agent, which is responsible for the even distribution of toothpaste so as to develop its disinfecting ability.[4]
