Triclosan is an antibacterial agent and is a common toothpaste ingredient in the UK. Triclosan or zinc chloride protects against gingivitis, and according to the American Dental Association, it reduces tartar and bad breath.[8][9] A 2006 clinical study included evidence of the effectiveness of 0.30% triclosan in reducing plaque and gingivitis.[10]
flavourings
justice
Toothpastes come in many colors and flavors to encourage their use. The most common flavorings are peppermint, spearmint and wintergreen. Toothpaste flavored with mint and anise oil is popular in the Mediterranean region. Each of these flavors is provided with its own oil, for example: peppermint oil.[4] More exotic flavors include aniseed anethole, apricot, bubble gum, cinnamon, fennel, lavender, neem, vanilla, ginger, lemon, orange and pine. There are also unflavored toothpastes.

Certain agents are added to reduce the tendency of toothpaste to dry into a powder. These agents include various sugar alcohols, such as glycerol, sorbitol, or xylitol, or related derivatives, such as 1,2-propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol.[12] Strontium chloride or potassium nitrate is used in some toothpastes to reduce sensitivity. Sodium polyphosphate is added to reduce calculus formation.
