After using toothpaste, orange juice and other juices have an unpleasant taste. Sodium lauryl sulfate alters a person’s perception of taste. It can break down phospholipids that inhibit sweet taste receptors, giving food a bitter taste. On the other hand, it is known that the taste of apples becomes better after using toothpaste.[23] The bitter taste of orange juice after using toothpaste is still an unsolved problem, whether it was caused by stannous fluoride or sodium lauryl sulfate, and it is believed that the menthol added for flavor may cause a change in our perception of taste when associated with the dental cold receptors.
