In a three-piece implant, the abutment is fixed to the implant with a butt-joint screw.[4] This screw needs to be fixed to a predetermined torque with the torque of the teeth, in order to avoid loosening the screw during chewing, which can often cause counterclockwise torque on the implant-abutment surface, and encourage the abutment screw to loosen. This can be largely prevented with proper screw design and bracket torque.
