A discussion was conducted at the University of Babylon, College of Medicine, by a doctoral student and a lecturer in the College of Dentistry / University of Karbala, Muhammad Sahib Al-Pasha, for his tagged thesis, entitled Study of the association of autoimmune Graves’ disease, type 2 diabetes, and herpes simplex virus-1.

The study included hyperthyroidism, a pathological condition characterized by an overproduction of thyroid hormones by the thyroid gland, which are responsible for regulating growth, development, and metabolism. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, is responsible for producing these hormones. Graves’ disease is one of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism. An autoimmune disorder causes the immune system to attack the thyroid gland, which produces too much thyroid hormone.

The study aimed to clarify the interrelationship between thyroid hormones and hormonal antibodies with microbial infection (HSV-1) in serum among patients with Graves’ disease.

The study was conducted to detect the prevalence of HSV in Graves’ disease in infected patients, as well as to investigate the role of HSV in the induction of Graves’ disease.
The study indicated that the levels of antibodies to thyroid hormone differed significantly between the different study groups, which may help in the diagnosis and management of autoimmune thyroid diseases such as Graves’ disease.
The student obtained a high distinction degree.
