Hormonal changes

According to the American Dental Association, if you have high levels of estrogen or progesterone, you are likely to experience gum sensitivity.

These hormones can increase blood flow to your gums, which can cause an increased reaction to plaque or bacteria in your mouth. You may experience inflammation, swelling or bleeding during times when hormone levels are high or fluctuating.

Events that may trigger gum sensitivity include:

puberty
Take birth control pills
menstrual cycle
pregnancy
amenorrhea
Helpful tip: People with high levels of estrogen or progesterone are more likely to develop gum disease. If you fall into this category, it is especially important to follow a proper oral care routine and to schedule regular dental visits.
