Every individual must be aware and aware of his responsibility towards protecting the information and electronic devices he uses, whether they are personal or affiliated with a business, such as official departments and institutions in the public and private sectors. Based on this principle, the College of Dentistry at the University of Karbala organized a scientific symposium on cybersecurity. And its importance in protecting individuals and institutions under the title (Electronic Security and Modern Hackings), where the symposium was held under the patronage of the Honorable Dean of the College of Dentistry, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhannad Salah Abdel Sattar, with the support of the Iraqi cybersecurity team and in the presence of a number of academic and security figures, such as the Directorate of Public Relations and the Directorate of Information. In the Popular Mobilization Forces, as well as figures from the Iraqi National Security Service, and a number of teachers, employees, and students at the college.
The symposium aimed to educate attendees about the dangers of cyberspace and to learn about the importance of cybersecurity in protecting society, institutions and individuals from electronic blackmail and harmful electronic attacks that threaten societal, institutional and individual security. Cybersecurity today is no longer important only for giant institutions and countries, but has also become necessary for ordinary individuals. Cybersecurity is defined as protecting networks, devices, applications, systems, and data from electronic threats such as theft, tampering, modification, interruption of service, and unauthorized access.
In order to increase digital awareness in this field, the symposium lecturer, Mr. Ali Muhannad Al-Moussawi, highlighted several topics, the most important of which were how to limit harmful electronic attacks, know the common hacking methods in the digital space, and how to protect oneself from these risks, of which he mentioned, for example: Example but not limited to:
- Theft, for example, hacking the electronic keys of modern cars and thus stealing them.
- Destroying or encrypting data and requesting sums of money from hackers to return that data.
- Leaking data, such as image files, videos, and documents, for people, or leaking databases for institutions. In both cases, people or institutions are blackmailed with sums of money, or they publish that information, causing great personal and financial damage.
The second important axis that this symposium addressed is commitment to work mechanisms and their application, such as updating computer programs and anti-virus programs to be in line with the latest updates to control information security penetration, as well as activating the role of field teams to raise the level of digital awareness among individuals in ways to combat cyber attacks and electronic blackmail, especially in universities, and how to An employee, teacher, or student deals with blackmailers.
In conclusion, the lecturer of the symposium, Mr. Ali Muhannad Al-Moussawi, a student in the fourth stage at the College of Dentistry, commented, saying: Security awareness is considered one of the most important lines of defense and protecting information and resources at the lowest cost. Studies have shown that the amounts spent on educating employees and individuals are much less than the amounts spent. To repair the damage resulting from the leakage of information and its access to unauthorized persons.
