It is also called Vincent’s stomatitis, after the French doctor Jean Hyacinthe Vincent 1862-1950, and it is also called trench mouth, because it was spread among soldiers stationed in the trenches during World War II.

The current approved nomenclature according to the classification of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for the year 1999 dropped the word acute from the old nomenclature – it was called in the past (acute death ulcerative gingivitis).
