Diabetes and gum disease

Gum disease is an infectious condition caused by bacteria in the mouth. As the disease progresses, the integrity of the tissues that support them and that support parts of the teeth is affected. In advanced stages, gum disease can cause pain and bleeding in the gums, pain when chewing, and even tooth loss.

Periodontitis is more common and requires more attention in people with uncontrolled blood sugar levels. This is because they generally have a lower resistance to infection, as well as a lower healing ability.
